Good posture is like a screwdriver. You likely have dozens of tools in your kit, but which one do you grab to solve most problems?
We’re not suggesting good posture is a cure-all, rather an effective way to invite daily wellbeing into your life.
Here’s a list of four daily habits that demonstrate the importance of good posture. Why? Every day we wake up and go to bed. The hours in between are when we fall into a daily rhythm that requires mental clarity, focus and cognition.
To truly set ourselves up for optimal performance and life-long habits that foster health and wellness, we need to learn how to make good posture a habit.
Consider this a brief lifestyle audit that’ll help you improve your posture, feel confident, and elevate those feel-good vibes we strive for on the daily.
Here are four times throughout the day to check in with your posture.
The Importance of Good Posture While Driving
Let’s face it, many of us have daily commutes that are taxing on our bodies. Turns out, driving posture matters. Long commutes can cause stiff neck, sore shoulders and back pain.
That’s why it’s crucial to check in with your posture while driving. Here’s the kicker: our cars aren’t always conducive to good posture. So, how do you improve your posture while driving?
First, start with your back. It’s important to support the natural curve of your spine, particularly your lower back. Ensure your tailbone is flush against the backseat. If your car has a lumbar support feature, make sure it’s activated. If not, place a lumbar cushion, small pillow or rolled towel between your seat and lower back.
If your commute is especially long, be sure to make stops to stretch along the way.
Maintain Upright Posture While Cooking
Whether you’re the next top chef, someone who loves cooking, or simply cook to fuel your body: cooking posture is important.
Think about it. When we cook, we hunch over countertops to chop, dice, peel, marinate, and prep. Although cooking may only take up short amounts of our day, this is a perfect time to actively improve your posture.
Often and without thinking we instinctively hunch over the stove or slump over a cutting board. This causes neck strain that works its way down the spine. The great news is that there are simple shifts to incorporate while cooking to maintain upright posture.
To alleviate pressure, stand on a rubber mat or rug while cooking. Another posture tip for cooking is to do all of your prep (chopping, peeling, etc.) while sitting.
Whether you’re sitting or standing, stay upright or wear a posture training device that vibrates when you slouch. Cooking is an excellent time for posture training!
Improve Your Posture While Eating
Now, what fun is cooking without a tantalizing meal to eat afterward? Meals are a chance for us to slow down, savor every bite and revel in the fruits of our labor. Unfortunately, sometimes we’re simply too busy to be mindful of our posture while eating. And that’s ok. The important thing is to start taking notice of your eating posture.
So, how can you improve your posture while eating? Ensure the spine is aligned, which will improve digestion and alleviate pressure from the internal organs.
Sit upright, keep your chin aligned with the table and–here’s the main ingredient–bring the food to your mouth. Doing this will help you maintain upright posture and avoid slumping over your food.
Practice Upright Posture While Waiting
Ok, this might sound strange at first, but stay with us. Think about how often we get stuck waiting. We’re talking about post office or grocery store lines, sitting in a waiting room at the doctor’s office or airport, waiting for coffee, etc.
In fact, the average person spends 2-5 years of their lives waiting in lines. Startling, right?
Well, next time you catch yourself waiting, scan the room. What do you see? Chances are, you’ll see a lot of heads hunched over phone screens. Hey–most of us do it. However, it’s because this unoccupied time has been filled with our digital worlds.
How do we maintain good posture while waiting? Ultimately, use waiting time as an opportunity to improve your posture.
Instead of slouching, elongate your spine, roll your shoulders back, stand hip-width apart, keep your head floating straight above your spine. Just like eating, if your phone demands your attention, bring it up toward your eyes rather than dropping your head down toward your chest.
Good posture come to those who wait—and sit upright.
How to Make Good Posture A Habit
As you can see, there are many opportunities to improve your posture daily. In fact, learning how to make good posture a habit requires small changes every day. The important thing to acknowledge is that you’re here, actively working on your posture and improving your daily wellbeing. Bravo!
The first step toward progress is to make small, daily changes that foster positive habits and good posture.
Did we mention that all of these activities are a perfect time to train with your UPRIGHT GO Posture Trainer? That’s right, simply wear your posture monitor for 15 minutes a day to welcome the benefits of good posture!
Now that you know how to improve your posture daily, seize the day and stay upright.
